‘Brother and sister’ found dead in house in south east London

A man and woman were found dead after concerns for their welfare resulted in the grim discovery of their bodies in a southeast London home.

A welfare check was carried out by officers around 3.00 pm on Tuesday at a home in Holstein Way, Thamesmead.

Inside, the pair were found with ‘serious injuries’ and declared dead at the scene. 

A police source told Metro the pair were brother and sister. The woman was aged in her 40s.

Neighbour Lucy Francis told Metro: ‘She was a recluse. ‘It is a shame we didn’t have much contact really, the last time I saw her was a year ago when she was being stretchered out of her flat with a suspected overdose.

‘I saw her brother around afterwards and he was clearly upset. Their mum died before she moved in.’

Their next of kin has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers as police continue to investigate what led to the pair’s death.

‘I know many residents in the local area will be questioning why police are carrying out enquiries within Holstein Way,’ Policeman Trevor Lawry said.

‘We are currently investigating the death of two people, which was unexpected and unexplained.

‘At this early stage, we are working with officers and local authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths. We believe that the two were known to each other, and at this time we are not seeking to speak with anyone else in connection with this.

‘A crime scene will remain in place until we have conducted our enquiries. Thank you to those in the local area for their patience.’

Shadikay Day Care, which is near the street where the pair were found, told Metro on the phone they were shocked, and hadn’t noticed police on the day their bodies were discovered.

Eseoghtene Keremu, who lives a few doors away from the residence, told Metro she heard sirens in the road on Tuesday and saw the road was taped off.

She said: ‘I was working from home and I heard lots of sirens and saw lots of police cars and at least two ambulances in the road. We don’t know what happened but it is really shocking and sad to hear this.

‘It isn’t like something like this happens all the time around here, we are a close community so I am shocked and it is just really sad.’

Neighbour Russell Wibb, 64, told Metro: ‘She kept herself to herself, but because the intercoms aren’t working, if she needed a health visitor they wouldn’t have been able to get in contact.

‘She’s lived there about 18 months, but before she moved in, the previous tenant was found dead with his dog after he collapsed. His nurse kept buzzing but assumed he wasn’t in, but he was dead by the front door.’
